Do try this at home…

Howdy neighbor-

After we (really it was the husbean and his assistant-the boy) got the guest/office/the man’s afternoon nap and tv watching room painted a harmonious shade of warm pale gray, the husbean wanted some bold color in his space.  He had his heart set on battle ship gray walls with deep scarlet red trim, which is uncharacteristic of his normal color choices of off-white and various shades of beige.  Knowing how many coats of primer it would take to neutralize the walls for re-sell, I gently objected and offered a reasonable solution for his want of manly colors…a rich red sip cover for his couch/futon/day bed thingy with coordinating accessories.

First there was the frame; an upcycled top bunk. Primary colors just not working with the new look. Moto-cover the ugly

5 yards of 180" wof in true red

All taped up and ready to be sewn together

Measure twice and cut once

As the piece were cut, I tape them to the frame using painter's tape

After the cover was complete, I wasn’t entirely happy with the color, so the finished product took a bath in scarlet red Ritz dye.  In the end, the husbean got his scarlet red and battleship gray.

Things I did right:
Drew a schematic with exact measurement of every piece, ironed fabric-it was a pain but it made the fabric much easier to work with, taped pieces to frame, and after sewing each piece I put it on the frame to make sure it fit before going on
Stuff I learned:
Leave a longer bottom hem…the finished slip cover doesn’t quite hit the floor .  Don’t use the super size setting on the washer when dyeing fabric.  My washer was leaking scarlet water and now the bottoms of the base boards have a red tint.
Now you go and cover the ugly!

  1. I don't see myself attempting slip covers or any sewing, beyond minor mending on my vintage 1970's Genie by Singer. But most impressive work Tina :) Can't wait to see what you tackle next...
